House Committee on Good Government Chair Johnny Pimentel clarifies the House is not trying to intimidate Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos into attending the July 25 hearing on the provincial excise tax funds of Ilocos Norte by showing her proposed detention facilities to media.
Pimentel said, “we will be following the proper procedure ano po ba kinatatakot ni gov imee. di naman namin siya ikukulong. yung pagpakita ng detention room is just a hypothetical in nature.pag nag attend si gov imee macros ako nakikiusap nga nagdadasal ako…para matapos na itong hearing natin.”
Pimentel clarified that the detention was shown at the request of the media which had been asking the House where it may detain Marcos if she disobeys the subpoena to attend the July 25 hearing.
Marcos had previously said she may skip the hearing on the advice of brother, former senator Bongbong Marcos.
Marcos is being probed for the allegedly anomalous purchase of vehciles from the excise tax funds without the required public bidding. the funds were supposedly also misused as the purchase of vehicles was not part of its intended use.
the total transaction in question is worth 66.4M pesos.
the probe was initiated by marcos’ political rival in Ilocos Norte, House Majority Leader Rodolfo Farinas.
Marcos’ provincial officials have alreday been detained by Congress for failing to answer questions on the transaction.
Under House rules, disobeying a subpoena to attend a hearing could get an individual cited for contempt, which carries a penalty of detention.
Pimentel meantime said they have not yet issued a show cause order to CA justices Stephen Cruz, Nina Valenzuela and Edwin Sorongon after they ordered the release of the provincial officials. Pimentel says they are waiting for the Cruz’s and Valenzuela’s decision on their motion for inhibition.
“that is why we cannot preempt i cannot in fact comment on that immediately beccause we have to await the decision of the justices we might probably issue the show cause order if our motion for inhibition will not be granted pero di pa tayo umaabot doon intayin na lang muna natin ang desisyon.”
a show cause order is issued to anyone who is being investigated for a possibly being held in contempt of Congress.
