For its first year in office, Congress has managed to come up with only 4 laws.
based on the report of House Majority Leader Rodolfo Farinas to House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, the 4 laws are Republic Act 10923 or the pospotnment of the baranggay and sangguniang kabataan elections , Republic Act 10924 or the national budget for 2017, Republic Act 10925 or the franchise renewal for GMA Network Inc and Republic Act 10926 or the franchise Renewal of Smart Communications.
The bicameral reports of 6 other proposals have been ratified and thus these are also en route to being signed into law by President Duterte. the 6 are” the extension of Philippine passport validity to 10 years, the free public wifi, the prohibition of the demand of deposits or adanced payments for hospitals and clinics, free college education, the adjustment of fines under the revised penal cose, the extension of drivers’ license validity to 5 years. The House also adopted the Senate’s version of the bill including casinos under the coverage of the anti money laundering law.
The House has approved on 3rd reading 194 measures, including the proposals to reinstate the death penalty and tax reform.
Over all from the start of the first regular session in July 2016 to the sine adjounrment May 31 this year, 6908 bills and resolutions were filed before the Lower House.
For 2017, Congress had a budget of 14.97B, an increase from 2016’s 13.5B.
